Mia's 5th birthday is on October 1st. We invited 4 of her schoolmates over for a "Princess Surprise Party." The surprise was two-fold, a treasure hunt followed by a cake decorating extravaganza. These pictures are a little out of order. Here we are mid-party ---decorating the cakes. We hung stars from the ceiling because Mia's class at school is known as the star class. Luckily, Aaron wasn't the only guy there. People brought their families so we made many new friends.

Asa made Mia's birthday card. It says "Mia-chan, o tanjobii omedetto!" I bet you can guess what that means in Japanese. Yep- "Mia- Happy Birthday!"

Cinderella left a letter to Mia with specific instructions about the treasure hunt. Each girl had two clues where to find some treasure. Once found, they needed to return to the living room to share it with each other. The girls did a great job. They found princess dresses, headbands, wands, necklaces, lip balm, purses and pencils. Here's the princesses holding court in all their splendor.

After a resounding "Happy Birthday to You" chorus, it was time to decorate their cake. I made an angel food cake and let them decorate their own slice. They had sprinkles, fudge sauce, whip cream, fruit, confection roses and little cocktail umbrellas. Mayu-chan was very proud of her cake. She thought it was "too pretty to eat." She somehow managed to overcome this...

Sumide-chan's cake was a delicate composition...

Mia-chan's cake was all about the sprinkles...

Maia-chan preferred fruit and whip cream...

Aru-chan preferred the little roses...

Then it was play time. Aaron chased them around quite a bit saying he was an oni---a Japanese sort-of monster.

At the end of the party Mia was presented with a card that all the girls had made for her. They each did a little panel, Mia was very impressed.

Mia said she had a great time. We all did.
