Mt. Takaosanguchi

A few weekends ago we went to a nearby mountain with our friends, the Yasuda family. We took a train 45 minutes out of Tokyo to Mt. Takaosanguchi. Miyuki reserved us a tatami room at a Japanese restaurant. What a good way to start a day trip: sitting down, relaxing, drinking green tea and eating great food. Now you can see why I like Miyuki so much.

The meal was 7 courses. We grilled our own chicken at the table...

One course was a little pan-fried trout. Mia thought it was "cute".

After lunch we walked in the restaurant's garden. Here's Mia and Ko-chan koi-watching.

The garden was extensive with bridges, ponds, waterfalls....

...even a water wheel.

Then we were off to the mountain. This is a mask of Tengu. Tengu is a mountain god that has a huge fan. He sits atop mountains and fans cool air off them. When you feel a fresh mountain breeze, you know Tengu is hard at work. Although this Tengu looks rather stern, he is known as a friendly deity.

To go up the mountain, you take these colorful lifts. I know, especially in light of Mt. Fuji, I should've hiked up Mt. Takao....

...but Mia and I had a great time riding the lift together.

At the top there are food concessions, a beer garden, hiking trails galore, and a monkey zoo. Mia and Ko-chan liked the lecture about monkeys or "saru".

The monkey keeper was full of anecdotes and had trained some monkeys to jump right into his arms, a big hit with the kids.

If you want more information about Mt. Takao:
