Tsukiji Fish Market

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsukiji_fish_market

This post is long over due. I went to Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo back in May when my friend Margaret came to visit.

Tsukiji is the largest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world. It opens at 3am when the fresh catch is brought in. The fish auction begins at 5am and is usually over by 7am. It's the tuna auction which is the most fascinating. A tuna can be caught off the coast of Australia one day, sold at Tsukiji the next, and on your dinner plate at a restaurant in New York on the third day. These tuna travel more than some people do in their whole lifetime.

The frozen tuna are hacked up by axes or large band saws.

And then they're on their way to your hometown restaurant in a flash!

This market is vast and colorful.

Meguro sushi, anyone?
