Nikko

When our friends Tracey, Brian, Maeve, and Tara visited we all went to Nikko. Nikko is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to it's many venerated temples, shrines and mausoleum of the shogun Nikkō Tōshō-gu and that of his grandson Iemitsu .

Upon arrival, we spent the night there during yet another monsoon. At one point, my friend Tracey was convinced that they were going to evacuate us from the hotel, it rained that hard. At the Japanese inn, we donned our yukata, hit the soaking pool, and had a good breakfast. Tracey, Brian and baby Maeve look pretty good for having tried to sleep during a torrential downpour the night prior. Miss Maeve was delightful, despite suffering from a touch of the stomach flu. Her sunny disposition kept our spirits high, though. To see Tracey & Brian's account of Nikko, go to:

Due to the rain, we limited our tour of Nikko to mainly the Toshogu Shrine area. Remember the adage, "hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil"? This is from the famous 17th century carving of the Three wise monkeys at the Nikkō Toshogu shrine. Mia loved the monkeys.

Here's our little family in front of the shrine, happy that the rain had cleared up.

Rhett has a cadre of Japanese admirers that seem to follow him everywhere. These ladies found him particularly "kawaii" or "super-cute" in English terms. Rhett was not alone. Maeve and Mia made quite a splash with the Japanese too.

I just love these stone lanterns. I wish we had seen them lit up at night time.

Aaron and the kids overlooking Toshogu Shrine. Wait a minute---I think they found the 4th wise monkey....see her in the red shirt?

Our last parting view...

Our only complaint was to not have seen more of Nikko. There are other shrines, lakes and waterfalls to be seen. We ended our trip by visiting a local onsen and soaking ourselves in the natural hot springs water. A great ending to our visit. I know we'll be back.
