Swimming Lessons

Miss Maiah (Mia's best friend from school) invited us to try out her swim class. They had an extra spot in the class, so we thought it would be fun to get Mia started with swim lessons here. It was a big success! The class is for 4-8 year olds. Mia and Maiah are the littlest and youngest in the class. Most of her classmates were swimming unassisted. Yoyogi Pool was beautiful, built for the Olympics. Here's Mia with her teacher. Everyone wears swim caps here, even the wee ones.

The class was an hour long. By the end of class the two girls were getting a little chilled. They hopped into the shower to warm up. Mia's the one with the white cap. This little shower turns on automatically when you walk through it to get to the pool. It sprays from the top and sides.

I learned about Japanese etiquette in the dressing room too. After swimming, you shower in your personal stall, with your suit on. You then put a towel-skirt around your neck which reaches to the floor. You disrobe your suit under it and then put your street clothes on under your towel too. All shoes are left outside the locker room. Needless to say, Mia unknowingly broke all the rules and then some. In the showers she stripped down to her birthday suit. Her little buddy Maiah got such a kick out of it---she did the same. Then they sprayed each other with the moveable shower hose. Then they started filling their mouths with water and spitting on each other. It was all fun and games until Maiah spit shower water on her mom. In the locker room Mia was sprinting around buck-naked with a towel over her shoulders, screaming "I'm super man!" You should have seen the look on the other mother's faces. I briefly thought that this might be our last invitation to do anything ever again with Maiah. These two were completely wired!

Afterwards the kids buy ice cream from the vending machine. Maiah shared hers with Mia. Here's Maiah with this cute little towel-hat that they wear after swimming. I need to find one for Mia.

We were invited to join the swim class, so Mia didn't totally offend the others. We'll be back next week!
