Little Girl Goes Native!!!

Here's our daughter's latest treat...

Here's our little girl eating her favorite lunch food. Here you see inari sushi stuffed with raw fish eggs. Whoa! Inari sushi is rice wrapped in a sweet tofu wrapper, this is a staple in our house. It's vegetarian and has some protein. The addition of the fish eggs is all Mia's idea.

Mia likes to buy onigiri, which is a snack food. It's basically a rice ball wrapped in nori (seaweed paper). In the center of onigiri are tasty surprises like salmon, sour plums, chicken, pork, and yes...sometimes raw fish eggs. Think of onigiri like a Cadbury chocolate egg, yummy on the outside with a delicious center. Mia LOVES the onigiri with the fish egg center. Today she asked me if I could start making her onigiri with fish eggs for school lunch in her bento box. So, I thought, why not? She was so happy to see me unpacking the fish eggs from my groceries. She insisted that I put a few in her inari for lunch. Here's the outcome. I must admit, I LOVE fish, but not enough to eat the salty, globular, raw, fish eggs. I'm proud that she's adventurous with Japanese food. Now if it would only rub off on my vegetarian husband (and me too).

Cheers!

Hmm, even inari-loving me is a little afraid of the raw fish eggs. But, I trust Mia's judgement! How's aaron doing in fish-world?

ah -- one of the things I miss most - going to the corner 24hr store and being able to buy the pre-made onigiri with salmon inside. Couldn't ever get the hang of the raw fish egg -- sorry, it will always be fish bait to me -- but liked the other surprises inside...

Has Mia had ume-boshi yet?
