Setsubun---Feb. 3!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setsubun

Today is Setsubun in Japan. Today marks the day before the next season begins, SPRING! On this day, the Japanese celebrate by parents wearing "oni" masks and the kids throwing "mame" at the oni. An oni is an evil devil of sorts, symbolized by a red mask with horns. Mame are dried soy beans. While throwing the beans, kids usually shout out "Oni was soto, Fuku wa uchi", which roughly translates to "evil spirits outside, good fortune come into our home". "Oni" being a bad spirit and "Fuku" being the spirit of well being. Here's a clip of Mia being the oni and Rhett trying to force her out of the house with his bean throwing.

HAPPY SETSUBUN!

That was great! Looks like you will be bringing back lots of traditions when you guys return to the states.

I feel like you and I have enacted this same tradition before, yet I used a sponge instead of mame. Hmmmm.
