Yon-de kudasai!!! Read please!!!

Well, my little Miss Mia just finished her first learn-to-read book. She and I were both delighted by this accomplishment. We've been working on this for quite awhile now (we started when she was 4...she's 5 now). 100 reading lessons, 20-30 minutes a day. Doesn't sound too tough, does it? When you take into account the attention span of a 4 year old, it becomes a little more challenging.

The reading program is based on simple phonetics which builds into regular reading lessons. Here's Mia reading one of her lessons to me.

It's a fun book. She practices the sounds each letter makes, practices reading silly stories, does reading comprehension exercises...

...and practices writing upper and lower case letters. Luckily, the stories are pretty funny, so she was always interested to read the next story. I liked the book because it gives concrete examples of how to coach your child in the reading process. I am by no means a literacy teacher, but this book made it easy for me to help Mia along the way.

Upon finishing her 100th reading lesson, we went out for cake to celebrate. She told me that she will miss her reading book. Little does she know how many great books await her...
